Abstract

This capstone research looks at how Philadelphia Public and Charter schools use social media to discuss, spotlight, promote and support The Black Lives Matter Movement and Black History Month. Data was collected through public Twitter accounts made by various schools. The data consisted of images, tweets, hashtags, emojis, videos, and retweets. The results from this data showed that there was overall a lot of positive support for these different causes and it showed the school felt that Black History Month and The Black Lives Matter Movement are very important concepts to understand and participate in especially in the black community. The data also found that schools are utilizing their platforms on social media to call for action for change against urban violence and police brutality. Also, they utilized their platforms as a way to spotlight what the students have done relating to these causes and to honor people that have made an impact in the communities that the school serves.
